Waking up on Christmas morning to the sight of a Christmas tree is a luxury that not everyone is able to experience – including many of the soldiers fighting for our country and their beloved families.
Trees for Troops is a program dedicated to ensuring all US soldiers and their families wake up with a fresh, farm-grown Christmas tree on Christmas morning. The program was created in 2005 through the generosity, dedication, and Christmas spirit of America’s Christmas tree growers, FedEx and the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation.
Since its inception, Trees for Troops has brightened Christmas for over 122,000 families at more than 65 military bases worldwide.
The Christmas SPIRIT Foundation, a charitable branch of the National Christmas Association, works to support the true spirit of Christmas for U.S. troops and their families. Their work is funded through donations, grants, and scholarships.
The farm-grown Christmas trees are donated to the program from generous growers and consumers. In 2014, 18,032 trees were donated- including many from Michigan. Michigan has proudly supported Trees for Troops since its very first year.
FedEx manages the logistics of the program. To this date they have tracked more than 573,000 U.S. miles, flying overseas many times.
How can you become involved?
Donations of any size are truly appreciated and making an on-line donation is quick and easy. You can visit the donation page, here. Another great option is to visit Peacock Road Family Farm during Trees for Troops Weekend (December 4-6). During that weekend, you’ll be able to purchase a tree and place it on a FedEx trailer to be donated.
If you’re a tree grower or retailer, consider donating trees to Trees for Troops. There will be two Michigan pick-up locations this season: Wahmoff Farms in Gobles and Dutchman Tree Farms in Manton. Please contact MCTA if you're interested in participating.
Trees for Troops has been recognized around the nation for their work. The program was honored by by the White House as a top 20 finalist in the Joining Forces Community Challenge in 2012. The program has earned many other recognitions, including an Independent Charities Seal of Excellence Award.
We hope you choose to participate in Trees for Troops this holiday season. Stay tuned for further information about participating farms in Michigan.
