Embrace the Holiday Spirit
As the holiday season nears, families in Michigan search for the perfect Christmas tree. Local Christmas tree farms offer a wide variety of trees. They also create unique experiences that enhance the holiday spirit. In this blog post, we summarize a recent article about the status and challenges of our local Christmas tree farms.
Growing Conditions: A Summer Overview
The article, “Christmas Tree Farm Report – July 26, 2024,” highlights growing conditions for Michigan’s Christmas tree farms. Southern Michigan has accumulated 1,792 growing degree days (GDD). The northern Lower Peninsula has 1,200 GDD, while the Upper Peninsula has 1,000. Most of the Lower Peninsula is 10 to 14 days ahead of the normal GDD accumulation. In contrast, the Upper Peninsula is near average or 10 days behind.
Soil Moisture: Rainfall and Drought Challenges
Most areas receive consistent rainfall, ensuring adequate soil moisture. However, counties like Isabella, Huron, Bay, Midland, and Tuscola face initial drought conditions.
Tree Care: Pruning and Shearing Techniques
Growers have started shearing and pruning single needle conifers like firs, spruces, and Douglas fir. Michigan State University Extension recommends practices to develop straight, symmetrical, and conical trees. Key practices include maintaining one central leader and limiting its growth to 12 to 16 inches. Growers should aim for a 2/3 taper for the tree shape. After achieving taper on the top whorls, they should carry it downwards to maintain the conical appearance.
Pest Management: White Pine Weevil Update
White pine weevil damage has surfaced in the southern Lower Peninsula. This pest affects white pine and Norway spruce blocks. Most growers are past the critical period for controlling this pest by removing infected shoots. They should prepare for early insecticide applications in spring 2025 to manage future infestations.
